The Positive Side of Stress


Existence, by general consensus, is a complicated affair that can be tackled in as many ways as there are people. It is possible to cruise by it without stressing too much, blatantly ignoring aspects and factors that can cause abrupt alterations in one's life. Alternatively extreme, it is also feasible to experience such levels of stress and anxiety that certain is unable to find protection only in certain regions of personal comfort. For others, life gets to all of them and they simply lose touch with reality itself, their psychological imploding. Yet, all of the approaches that people have come up with to cope with life tend to be rooted firmly in stress.



The fact is, tension is a prevalent and natural component of existence. Even during simpler, more idyllic occasions, there was always a particular level of pressure that individuals had to deal with. The actual triggers that cause states of extreme duress differ from person to person, due to the fact people have different levels of tolerance for it. A few may find a certain degree of pressure to be completely intolerable, while others could get through it relatively unscathed. Perspective and perception, in this specific case, appears to be the important thing factor in determining just how much stress a person can handle. However, regardless of how 1 views the demands that modern life heaps up on a person, it still has to be dealt with in some way.



Complete avoidance from it is not the answer. Leaving duty and ignoring things that cause tension would inevitably be a bad move. Tension, in smaller and much more controlled amounts, may be used as a personal signal. It can act as an indication that something needs to be done and certain situations need immediate attention, which can assist someone in assessing his immediate as well as long-term priorities. So long as the reason for the problem is approached properly and the person does not let the problem blow itself out of correct context, then a bit of pressure is not necessarily a negative thing.



Nevertheless, allowing the demands of life to get at you is just as poor as simply ignoring them altogether. The human mind, while clearly a fine example of finely-tuned machinery, has limitations. Having too many things to do and not having enough time to perform them can sometimes be seen as an example of poor time management, but for some people, having "too little time" means precisely that. Taking in a lot of tasks and attempting to multi-task beyond one's mental capability to coordinate can result in rapid burn-out for some people, as well as irreparable insanity in others. It is people as well as situations like these that provide stress the "entirely negative" reputation that it has, with individuals taking the whole thing completely out of proportion.



Ultimately, stress is very similar to fear. Both are used by modern society and culture in highly negative light, but both are components of the human psyche that are as integral to being human as adore and happiness. Each can effectively cripple someone and prevent all of them from living, however only if the person enables that to happen. Both of the above need not be dreaded, so long as the person is capable of recognizing that reasonable amounts can be used inside a positive manner. Tension and fear, in and of themselves, are not positive, but like anger, can be used to point someone in the correct direction.
